2009 Fishing Season and 2010 Fishing Outlook

Thank you to all our guests who fished at Hakai Lodge this summer. The Canadian government had predicted a very strong fishing season in 2009. It turned out even better than they predicted. There was a fantastic run of very large Coho that lasted the entire summer. It was the best run in at least 17 years, and the first season in our 37 years of operation which provided a large quantity of 24 pound Coho. The King Salmon (Chinook / Tyee) catch was also better than average with the biggest catch at Hakai weighing in at 56 pounds.

The Canadian government is predicting a very large run of Kings in 2010, and all indications support this. Halibut fishing was also above average in 2009, but the great salmon fishing completely overshadowed it. Ever since the Canadian government practically eliminated commercial salmon fishing around Hakai Lodge about ten years ago, all the fishing runs have shown a spectacular resurgence, which has been terrific for sports fishermen (and women) in general.

We are just beginning our 38th year at Hakai. The cover picture on the new brochure and website will be a 56 pound King caught very early in August. It is very satisfying to own a resort in such a great fishing area. The world economy is beginning to improve so we expect a very strong demand for fishing trips for the 2010 season.
